The environmental footprint of different heating systems as well as the effectiveness of different improvement measures (integration of solar components, use of biogenic energy sources, etc.) were determined and compared with each other using the life cycle assessment (LCA) method. The ecological comparison of the different heating systems was made per 1 kWh of heat at the output of the energy converter (useful energy). The focus in the selection of the heating systems was on the standard solutions that can be used according to the model regulations of the cantons in the energy sector (MuKEn 2014) to fulfil the regulations for heat generation replacement (module F) and also on the biogas solution. These systems were considered for single-family houses and multi-family houses as well as for the heating of entire areas. In the study, the general conditions in Switzerland were considered. The relevant key figures of the heating systems were updated to the current situation and an outlook for the future was given.
