Many companies face the challenge of reducing their Scope 3 footprint, particularly in purchasing. The collaboration in this project demonstrates a pragmatic and cooperative approach to involving the supply chain and initiating improvements.
For the Intercoop House & Garden Cooperative, we calculated the footprints of various products, taking into account not only the climate impact but also the general environmental impact. In addition to the climate impact, other environmental impacts such as land consumption, air pollution, etc. are also included in the analysis.
As the manufacturers/suppliers were included in the process, the analyses could be carried out using primary data. In addition to the status quo analysis, potentials were calculated based on our experience in eco-design. The results were used to enter into an exchange with the manufacturers in order to sensitise them and initiate improvements. When implemented, the entire supply chain benefits and, fortunately, quick wins have already been realised.
It has been shown that the comprehensive environmental analysis provides valuable insights for optimisation that a pure climate analysis cannot cover. This ensured that only measures that make sense for the environment as a whole and not just for the climate were recommended.
