Life cycle assessment comparison of the local evaporated salt production Riburg with various imports of evaporated salt, rock salt and sea salt

On behalf of the Schweizer Salinen AG we analysed the CO₂ and environmental footprints of the Riburg production with a comprehensive life cycle assessment and made a comparison with possible scenarios for the procurement of de-icing salts abroad including delivery to the warehouse in Riburg.

This showed that from an ecological point of view it makes more sense to maintain and optimise the local production of evaporated salt than to import salt. Any advantages of less energy-intensive products, such as sea salt and rock salt, are cancelled out by the environmental damage caused by the transports. In addition, for the use of sea salt and evaporated salt, adjustments to the storage infrastructure and the emergency vehicles are necessary and undesirable side effects of impurities in sea salt and rock salt must be taken into account when they are used by winter road clearance services.
