The SOB commissioned Carbotech to analyse whether a PV system on a platform roof would have a positive environmental impact if the old roof had to be dismantled and a new, more stable roof built. To this end, it was calculated whether the benefit of the additional renewable electricity is sufficient to compensate for the expense of the construction activities, whereby the increasing proportion of electricity from renewable energies was also taken into account in the model. The model covers both the climate and environmental perspectives.
In addition to the result that it is currently an ecologically sensible investment, it was particularly interesting that the time of implementation is decisive: the later the investment takes place, the lower the ecological benefit of PV electricity compared to the electricity mix, which is also becoming greener. We not only gave the customer an answer to the question “Is it worth it?”, but we were also able to provide the decisive variables for similar questions in the future by analysing the system.
