In the study ‘CO2 and energy balance of biochar’, a CO2 and energy balance of biochar production was carried out for three specific plants in the Swiss context. The study looks at biochar production from wood harvesting to delivery of the packaged biochar (cradle-to-gate). The objectives were to calculate the potential sink performance, analyse the influence of sensitive factors on the result and classify the results in terms of the suitability of the pyrolytic production of biochar as a negative emission technology for the canton of Lucerne.
Thomas Kägi from Carbotech conducted the critical review of the study.
