Carbon footprint in the electrical sheet industry: determining scope 3 and calculating potential measures

Projectteam: Gerrit Hinkel
Year: 2024
Client: Stanzwerk AG

Stanzwerk AG provides products and services for the construction of electric motors. These include the stamping of stator and rotor laminations from electrical steel, which are then assembled into ready-to-install stator and rotor stacks using various processes.
In further steps, the rotors are cast in aluminium and the rotor shaft is pressed in.

In order to reduce the company’s climate impact in the long term, Stanzwerk AG commissioned an energy consultancy and Carbotech to draw up a comprehensive carbon footprint, including a reduction pathway and possible measures. In this collaboration, Carbotech carried out all calculations relating to Scope 3.

In order to do justice to the relevance and complexity of the metal products, product carbon footprints were modelled for the purchased goods, in particular the electrical sheets, in the SimaPro life cycle assessment software and supplemented with data from the suppliers and Stanzwerk AG. The transports were also modelled using primary data.

In addition to calculating measures/improvement potential, the footprint is also used to register with SBTi. In addition, the findings of the analysis and further insights into sustainability were passed on to relevant employees as part of an awareness-raising presentation by Carbotech.
