Environmental Product Declaration EPD

Consumers are not in the position to carry out Life Cycle Assessments personally on all products they buy. Nevertheless, they do demand that certain social and environmental criteria are fulfilled by their choice. Environmental labels were created as a solution, with the stated aim of providing the consumer with the means of making an informed choice. These come in several forms: a known and recognised Environmental Label (e.g. Blue Angel, FSC), a self-declaration, or an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD).

Type 1: Environmental Label – assessed according to one or more criteria –label only

Type 2: Self-assessed label for specific properties – self declaration of the manufacturer –declaration only – paper/cardboard plastic

Type 3: Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) – quantification of the environmental impact from cradle to grave – declaration and certificate by independent auditor

EPDs in accordance with ISO 14 025 are based on the Life Cycle Assessment requirements and support clients who wish to communicate the environmental performance of their products – EPDs are made and certified by independents.

EPDs cover environmental criteria, such as raw material consumption or greenhouse potential, over the entire life cycle of the product, as well as further specifications.

The EPD information can be presented with the product or made available on the Internet. In this way, your customers can make a comparison to the environmental impacts of similar products. An EPD is also an important means of communicating environmental information between companies.

Carbotech has conducted EPDs for several clients, and has a broad range of experience to draw on. We support you in the planning and implementation of corresponding labels.
